What is Organic Traffic?
Organic traffic is simply referral traffic that arrives from the non-advertised portion of search engines. The only real way to receive this type of traffic is by having a web presence and web page to match the algorithm of a given search engine.
In other words, this is the free traffic you get from search engines by matching their requirements for a given search query.
SEO vs Content Marketing
In order to maximize on organic traffic SEO is needed which will simply allow a website and individual webpages to more appropriately match search engines’ algorithms. It is really just a matter of understanding what a search engine wants and then giving them that.
Many websites claim to not need SEO and therefore optout of any type of optimizations as they simply rank naturally. Whether a website intentionally optimizes for a specific set of keywords or not is irrelevant as best practices can always be avoided by you can still benefit from such sources.
Rank vs Traffic
In the modern era of SEO rank is more of a vanity metric vs total amount of organic traffic. It is nice to understand which keywords are ranking highly but assumptions can be made making rank relatively unimportant. It is more important to undertand the commercial value of keywords.
For example: In the auto industry, let’s say you have a page http://mediocrecars.com/honda/ let’s say we are ranking #1 for “Honda Accord” we can assume that we are getting 35% of X so we are getting all of this. WOW! But who cares the user is landing on your generic honda page with we can assume based on the page’s content is only there to browse honda cars. Regardless of honda accords, or pilots, etc.
Now let’s see another page http://mediocrecars.com/honda/accord/2017/hybrid/ and lets say we are ranking for the exact same term. Now this is more important because regardless we are going to be getting traffic from a variety of sources but the user intent is different bercause the content of the page dictate that the user knows exactly what they are looking for they type, model, make. They are in a frame of mind which demonstrates a buyers mindset. They are not browsing they are buying.
For these reasons if used correctly and you understand modern SEO then organic traffic (which is not created equal) can have the absolute highest ROI imaginable!
